Texas Catholic Historical Society

Unable to rely exclusively on funds supplied by the Texas State Council and private loans granted by Driscoll, the Commission created the Texas Catholic Historical Society (TCHS) as another revenue stream. Initially, membership to the TCHS was advertised to Fourth Degree Assemblies. Dues were $2 for an individual membership or $10 for a council.

The TCHS published “Preliminary Studies,” a collection of essays written by Commission members prior to the publication of Our Catholic Heritage in Texas. After the work of the Commission ended, the TCHS was dissolved and used as a placeholder by Texas hierarchy to own the literary rights of Commission publications. The TCHS was reorganized in 1976 and in 1990 the organization began publishing an annual historical journal. Today, the Catholic Southwest journal remains a feature of TCHS.
